Adnan Adam Onart will discuss and present his poetry dedicated to the everyday lives of Turkish people living in diaspora and dislocation all over the world with special attention to the predicament of Crimean Tatars throughout their history. He discusses the challenges of writing poetry in a language other than the mother tongue and how the experiences of his family were an inspiration source for his poetry.

Adnan Adam Onart

Adnan Adam Onart, a Turkish-American poet, lives in Cambridge, MA.

His work appeared in  Prairie Schooner, Colere Magazine, Red Wheel Barrow, The Massachusetts Review, among others.  His first poetry collection, The Passport You Asked For, has been published by The Aeolos Press, together with Kenneth Rosen’s Cyprus’ Bad Period.  He earned an honorable mention in the 2007 New England Poetry Club Erika Mumford Award. He is one of the winners of 2011 Nazim Hikmet Poetry Competition.

His Turkish poems have been published in different magazines: Soyut, Yordam, Kardaş Edebiyatlar, Kırım and Dergah. International Poetry Review  published his translation (together with Victor Howes) from Edip Cansever, a Turkish contemporary poet. He is also the author of TURKISH: A Dictionary of Delight, edited by Roger Conover; ZKM, Karlsruhe,  Second Printing, 2006 .

Adnan Onart earned his Ph.D. from University of Istanbul and conducted post-doctoral research at Frankfurt University as an Alexander von Humboldt Scholar under the supervision of Professor Karl-Otto Apel. He authored several books and essays on philosophy, linguistics, mathematical logic and computer networking.

Mary Buchinger

Mary Buchinger is the author of seven collections of poetry; her most recent books are Navigating the Reach (Salmon Poetry, 2023) and Virology (Lily Poetry Review Books, 2022); The Book of Shores is forthcoming. Her work has appeared in AGNI, Maine Review, Plume, Salamander, Salt Hill, Seneca Review, and elsewhere. DENISE PROVOST

Denise Provost

Besides long service in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Denise Provost has also published two poetry collections: Curious Peach (2019) and City of Stories (2021.) Her poems have appeared in such journals as Ibbetson Street, Muddy River Poetry Review, Light Quarterly, qarrtsiluni, and Poetry Porch. Provost received the Best Love Sonnet award in the 2012 Maria C. Faust Sonnet Competition, and the New England Poetry Club’s Samuel Washington Allen Prize in 2021.
