Heavenly Journeys displays the negotiations and transformations that the Alevi community is undergoing for the last three decades in Germany by a central element of its ritual practice which is also declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. The documentary combines the perspectives of a young woman, who used to perform “semah” publicly with a folklore group, and İskender, an elder who learned it by participating in “cems” in Anatolia.
