Director Fatih AKIN
Fatih Akın (1973, Hamburg, Germany) began studying Visual Communications at the Hamburg College of Fine Arts in 1994. He directed his first full length feature film Short Sharp Shock (Kurz und Schmerzlos) in 1998. This film brought him immediate success and several awards, including the Bronze Leopard at Locarno and the Bavarian Film Award (Best Young Director).
It was followed in 2000 by the road movie In July (I’m Juli), the one-hour documentary We Forgot To Go Back (Wir haben vergessen zurückzukehren in 2001, the emigration drama Solino in 2002. In 2003 he founded the film production company Corazon International. In 2004 critically acclaimed Head-On (Gegen die Wand) brought Akın numerous international awards, including Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
In 2005 his documentary Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul was another success. Akın’s The Edge of Heaven won the prize for Best Screenplay at the 60th Cannes Film Festival in 2007. Following his comedy film Soul Kitchen in 2009, his documentary Polluting Paradise in 2012 was screened in the Special Screenings section at the Cannes Film Festival. His 2014 film The Cut was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival. In 2017, Akın’s film In The Fade was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in the main competition section at the Cannes Film Festival, Diane Kruger winning the Best Actress Award. The film was selected as the entry for the Best Foreign Language Film of Germany at the Academy Awards. The film won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
Most of Akın’s films were screened at the Boston Turkish Film Festival in previous years, including Crossing the Bridge in 2006.
