Prof. Dr. Ali Akyüz (80) was born in a poor village in Trabzon. After a childhood marked by hardships, he was admitted to Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine. Despite challenging circumstances while staying with relatives, Akyüz completed his medical education and began his career as an idealistic doctor at Istanbul State University Çapa Faculty of Medicine. Taking initiative without the administration's approval, he renovated the clinic to meet private hospital standards, aiming to improve the poor conditions of the hospital. Akyüz gained recognition for not charging impoverished patients and for securing financial support for the hospital. After receiving training in England, he performed Turkey's first laparoscopic surgery, becoming a pioneer in the field of surgical endoscopy. His contributions quickly earned him renown in the medical community. Despite winning the rector election, Akyüz was not appointed to the position and was dismissed from his role at the hospital. Devoting his life to the advancement of medicine, Akyüz paid a heavy price for clashing with the governing authorities.
