The online photography exhibit of Safranbolu Time Travel by A. Cemal Ekin highlights the historic town of Safranbolu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Safranbolu has been preserved practically intact. Although its history goes back thousands of years, it reflects the characteristics of the 17th-century Ottoman era. Named after one of its main products, saffron, it was also a center of wealth during the Ottoman times. In addition to remarkable architecture with dominant woodwork inside and out, and frescos decorating some walls, the town has another very noticeable characteristic: the absence of noise. A visit to Safranbolu is almost like time travel as if you go back to 1600-1700.
A. CEMAL EKİN
A. Cemal Ekin has been photographing with highly eclectic interests for more than sixty years, has been to different places, documented the faces and places he has seen, and photographed the objects surrounding him.
In a finished photograph, he strives to present what he saw and felt rather than what the camera recorded. Some call this “manipulation,” but he says all photographs are manipulated, bar none. He wants his prints to convey his creative vision, which the camera lacks, and his visual system that is orders of magnitude better than any camera can be today.
Ekin says, although he keeps a very open mind about making all necessary adjustments to his photographs to convey his emotions and what he saw, he strives to produce work that is free from processing artifacts and looks “effortlessly done.” His photography is not about the techniques and tools he uses. They should be subservient to the vision, not the other way around.
